2000 Sydney Olympics Security Operation

The security operation for the Sydney Olympic Games― described as the ‘best games ever’―was the largest in the history of the NSW Police Force.

Approximately 4,900 officers around the state were deployed to the various Games venues and the Olympic Village.

When the games opened on 15 September 2000, police were prepared and ready to deal with every possible contingency including terrorist threats, soccer riots and natural disasters.

Working behind the scenes on behalf of members, the Association secured an Olympics attendance allowance.

Leading up to the games, PANSW organisers were on the ground, visiting sites, inspecting accommodation and ensuring WHS requirements were met and dealing with any shortfalls.

As well, the Association ensured members across the state were not understaffed and could meet their day-to-day operational policing requirements.
